SUBJECT: HYDRO-CUSHION BALL BUSHINGS

Dear MILNOR Dealer/Customer:

In a number of installations we have visited recently, we have found ball bushing, utilized on the hydro-cushion upper and lower shaft, exhibiting a stick-slip action. This produces a "popping" noise which can be very misleading. As a matter of fact, we are pretty sure that some hydro-cushions have been replaced in error because of this ball bushing "popping" noise.

After researching this issue, we understand this to be a ball bushing LUBRICATION problem. It is necessary to ensure that the grease is evenly distributed across the ball bushing. IN order to do this, we have used a lever arm to "swing" the extractor shell while at the same time putting grease in the ball bushing through the grease fitting. The same action would apply to a washer/extractor in order to properly lubricate the ball bushing.

In the long term if the ball bushing is not lubricated, we are fearful that the material will gall, necessitating replacement of the ball bushing.

Please ensure that these bushing are lubricated to prevent any long term maintenance issues.

In addition, the inner race of the bushing is "vented" to the hydro-cushion shaft. This vent may align itself with the keyway of the shaft and make lubrication more difficult (see attached tag). Nonetheless, while lubricating, proper grease application will still occur.

In your service,
